Alhamdulillah the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) has also endorsed the decision of Hilal Sighting Committee of North America and announced Eid Ul Adha for Tuesday, December 9 Insha'Allaah. So has the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat of North America Alhamdulillaah. Extending our Matla to South America may present major problems such as asking New York to start/stop fasting due to Hilal sighting in South America, even when New York Moonset is BEFORE Sunset! Seasons (Summer / Winters) have major effect on Hilal visibility curves (roughly parabola shaped) and the seasons reverse when you go to South America. Further, in Hadith Kurayb, Damascas sighting is not accepted for Medinah Munawwarah even though most of the distance between Damascus and Medina is North - South. Thus Insha'Allaah we should in fact contemplate reducing our Matla and at the very least not increasing it. |

There are no authenticated Hilal Sighting Claims from anywhere in North America on November 28th 2008G. Hence we complete 30 days of the month of Dhul Qi'dah. Dhul Hijjah starts on Nov 30st 2008G, with Eidul Adha being on Tuesday, December 9 Insha’Allaah. Eid Mubarak. The apparent Hilal sighting claim from Florida was investigated by at least 4 Astronomers and refuted on the basis of shape of crescent, timing, position and direction of movement. Further, other Muslims in the SAME location failed to sight the Hilal in spite of clear skies. Thus the “Jamme Ghafeer” or requirement of large number of witnesses in case of clear skies was not met. Also negative sighing reports were received from West of Florida including Texas and California. This decision is also endorsed by the Shariah Council of California, Zaytuna Institute and many others Alhamdulillaah. The Hilal Sighting Committee of North Amerca has over 750 members and organizations covering almost all of the states of USA and Canada Alhamdulillaah and all are encouraged to register for free Insha'Allaah. Some of the evidence on celebrating Eid ul Adha by local 10th of Dhulhijja instead of Saudi announcement comes from the following: - We do not see any evidence from Seerah that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ever attempted to synchronize the Eid ul Adha date in Medinah with the Hajj date in Makkah ? (Please note that 10 nights and 9 days were enough to send a messenger from Makkah to Medinah with the news).- On the contrary, Darul Uloom AlMadania, Buffalo, New York, USA has published a paper at www.madania.org/english/article_ramadan_moonsighting.php which proves that during the last year of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the Dates of Makkah and Medinah were different. - We do not see any evidence of the Khulafa Rashideen doing this synchronization between Makkah and Medinah or elsewhere - For over a 1000 years of Islamic History it was impossible for Muslims in far-away countries like Indonesia to find the Hajj date in time for Eid ul Adha ? How could Allaah (SWT) ask us to do this synchronization, which was impossible for over a 1000 years ? - "Following Makkah sighting for World wide dates" is NEITHER Ikhtilaaf AlMataale - Local sighting, NOR Ittihaad AlMataale - Global sighting - which means follow FIRST report worldwide - whether Saudia or Nigeria or Fiji etc. ? - It can be possible in certain years to see Dhul-Hijja Hilal in North America one date BEFORE Saudi Arabia (about 45% chance). Following Saudi announcement for Dhul-Hijaa would then mean we ignore the Hilal if seen locally and wait an extra day for Saudi Arabia sighting! This can’t be justified in Shariah. - Hajj became obligatory in 9th Hijri year, while EidUlAdha was instituted soon after Hijrah. (we find in Tirmidhi: Reported on the authority of Ibn Umar (RA): Rasulallah (SAW) lived in Medina for ten years and made sacrifice each year). Furthermore Eidul Adha prayers are not for the Hujjaaj. - In addition to Fatawa of Saudi Scholars like Sheikh AlOthaimeen (RH), other major world scholars like Mufti Taqi Usmani (Deputy Chairman of Islamic Fiqh Academy, OIC, Jeddah), and the Annual Session of Fiqh Academy, held in Jordan, October 11-16, 1986 attended by more than 100 outstanding scholars of Shariah adopted a resolution recommending that all Muslim countries should determine all the lunar months including Dhul-Hijjah on the same basis for both EidulFitr and EidulAdha. - There are frequent errors in the Saudi Announced date hence better to go by local sighting anyway. - An argument often presented to “follow Saudi announcement” is “Unity of Muslims”. First of all, Unity has to be based on Qur’an and Sunnah. We can’t say that the whole world should pray Fajr by Makkah time for unity! Furthermore, if we want unity locally, - isn't it permissible for those who believe in the incorrect early date to still delay and pray Eid on "their second day" Insha'Allaah, since the Eid prayers are permissible on any of the 3 days? But those who follow the correct date can't pray a day early and accept an unfounded innovation (since it is neither Ikhtilaaf AlMataale nor Ittihaad AlMataale). The new moon for the month of Dhul Qi'dah was sighted on the evening of Thursday, Ocotober 30, 2008G, by reliable witnesses at numerous locations throughout North America including Virginia, Georgia, and Texas after completion of 30 days of Shawwal. As such, Friday, October 31, 2008G, will be the first day of Dhul Qi'dah in North America.
