We are pleased that after the chaos in 2005G, there was a sense of urgency to start all Islamic months correctly on the basis of actual crescent sighting in North America and celebrate both Eids on one day on this basis.
Al-Hamdulillah, after consistent efforts a consensus has developed among Ulema (scholars) and Muslim astronomical experts to establish a Hilal Sighting Committee of North America.
Muslims are at the crossroads in America. We are facing many challenges. One of the gravest internal challenges is the lack of unity among the Muslim communities. Our unity can and should be achieved only on the basis of complete acceptance in principle of all that Prophet Muhammad (s) has brought including the Shari’ah.
Hold fast to the rope of Allah and do not get divided (3:103)
The Rope of Allah is the Kitaab Allah (the Qur’an) and the authentic Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (s). Holding fast to that rope is, at the very least to accept the principle that we should live by, judge by, and resolve disputes by what Allah and His Rasul (s) teach us.
Our children are puzzled and confused. Ahmad celebrates Eid on Tuesday and Hamed on Wednesday though live in the same town and are in the same classroom. What kind of example are we providing to our next generation and what message to their non-Muslim friends and teachers?
Al-Hamdulillah, on Sunday, May 28, 2006, more than 55 Muslim community leaders and Imams of Tri-state Masajid met in a daylong conference to address the issue of the unification of Islamic dates, especially for Ramadan and Eidain. The conference held in New York was addressed by prominent Ulema of various schools of thought as well as Muslim astronomical experts.
Ulema and community leaders have attempted for years to unify the Muslims without much success at the local or national levels. This was the first successful attempt by the Ulema and Imams of diverse schools of thoughts, and Muslim moon-sighting experts to form a Hilal Sighting Committee of North America. This is an independent and non-sectarian committee for just one purpose, i.e. Hilal (moon crescent) sighting.
A resolution was presented and approved by the attendees of the conference. According to that the Ulema and the astronomical experts have agreed that the Islamic month should begin after a verifiable naked-eye sighting of the Hilal in Contiguous/Mainland US (excluding Alaska & Hawaii) and Canada. Muslim astronomical experts will provide the sighting data and point out about the astronomical possibility of moon’s earliest visibility somewhere in the Contiguous/Mainland US (excluding Alaska & Hawaii) and Canada. They will deliver their recommendation after carefully evaluating the eyewitness accounts. The final decision, however, will be made by the Shura of the Hilal Sighting Committee of North America and conveyed to member Masajid through e-mails and announced on the web site. Local Masajid and individuals will be able to access it on the web site: www.hilalsighting.org
The free membership is open to all Masajid and organizations and al-Hamdulillah, many Masajid have already joined the ranks.
The Committee has also published a beautiful dual lunar and solar dates’ calendar showing the earliest visible Hilal, the first dates of Islamic months and the actual shape of the moon at each lunar date.
We pray, may Allah give us Tawfeeq to follow His path for His pleasure. Aameen.
